Aikitu Tanakadate (1856-1952), later known as the "father of Japenese seismology", studied electricity and magnetism under Lord Kelvin at Glasgow University from 1888-1890, undertaking research on anmeters. He went on to become Japan's first distinguished physicist and one of the country's most reknowned geophysicists and seismologists.
